Got an email from David today who wanted to know:
Which arm was left weak and how long did it take to get it back?
Can you type with both hands yet?
Is your book selling well?
My left hand’s not opening fully yet but with the exercises I do, it’ll come.
That’s the only way you must think, mate!!! Overall, my arms are pretty good – still a bit of tone there, you know, I can do most things, although punching is hard. (Bet Mike Tyson’s glad to know that!)
These days, I can drive, work, do the gardening, most things really, and I reckon I’m 90 % there now. Oh, there are bits here and there which I need to work on, but I’m not too worried. After all, I’ve had 3 years of obsession, (which sure puts pressure on your relationship), so I feel I can cool it a bit now. Okay, I limp a bit but who cares? I can settle for that; just getting out of that wheelchair is a blessing, ey?
My book’s starting to get more interest; don’t think it’ll be another 50 Shades of Grey cum Harry Potter but me and my ghost writer are just happy people like it and, judging by the feedback, it’s certainly helping others. If we sell a lot that would be great too, but it’s early days really. At the moment, I just gotta keep focusing on getting my life back in order, as I am sure you’ll be keen to do too. It’s sooooo frustrating, ey? Aaaarrhh!!! But it’s a question of what ya can, when ya can, buddy.
One tip – ask your chemist for some protein powder. A glass of that twice a day, morning and afternoon (or before exercise) would help. Then there are bananas – me, I swear by two!
Supplements? I take zinc. glucosamine, magnesium, Vitamin C, porridge….. try to keep off the sugar, but dark chocolate helps – let’s face it, no one can live without chocolate! Bugger that, ey? Hahaha
Favourite grub? Eggs and fish, steak, raw broccoli chopped up in sealed bags – it’s a way of life now. Oh yeah, tuna and pasta is good too. I had a bad moment last week; my doctor said I need to eat slow releasing energy foods. It’s a bloody balancing act! The brain will mend, but you’ll only
mend the brain I think. Getting muscles back is hard bloody work: Repetition, repetition, repetition…..If you can’t keep up the regime, then you may need therapy which will facilitate the movement for a while. I used a pulley system (as seen on my videos): http://www.youtube.com/user/Thewizardofoz2011 or
you can see them on petercoghlan.com
Building up your body takes hours and hours every day, every day. If you put in the time and effort, you can get things back but only when the connections are there!!
Incidentally, my mate also has one arm which isn’t working yet, but funnily enough his bicep has recently started to work! That’s promising!
You just work what ya can as it comes. That’s all ya can do – the important thing is you’re trying!
Even now I’m typing this with dodgy fingers on my iPhone – keep the bastards working, I say! I’ve noticed over time I’m getting faster and hit the right letters now. Before I hit the wrong ones (the keys are so small!!!), but it’s good for those fine mortar skills.
To sum up: Keep upbeat, that’s number one.
Eye of the tiger, mate, eye of the tiger!!’
